Chicago’s increasing violence–the latest “white alert” lockdown in a south side school

Up until now, all I knew about school violence was from reports in the newspaper. Today, while at a meeting in a school building, an announcement came over the PA system that we were in a Code White. All the doors were to be locked and no one was to leave.

I visit schools fairly often, and lately have noticed signs of increasing security. Visitor passes. Notices about color code alerts. Police presentations to parent groups about gang activity. Doors locked where they weren’t locked before.

And lately, in this area at least, violence seems to be especially targeting schools. So far this year, 20 school children have been killed in gun violence. In April alone, threats have been received at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia, South Suburban College in South Holland, St. Xavier University in Morgan Park, (prompting more school closings for the surrounding Mother McAuley High School, Brother Rice High School, Queen of Martyrs Elementary School and Evergreen Park Southwest Elementary), Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Malcolm X College on the West Side, and St. Charles North High School in the western suburbs.

All of this is taking place against the backdrop of shootings at Columbine High School in April 1999, Virginia Tech in April of last year, and the five deaths last month at Northern Illinois University.

Our group was eventually permitted to leave the building under escort, but not without some worrisome moments. Some of our group still had pre-school children in a daycare area of the school who continued to be held in lockdown.

Palestine Film Festival in Chicago

What can I say about the Palestine Film Festival? It’s fascinating. Go.

Other years it has been spread over many locations throughout the city, many of them in tiny spaces that were, shall we say, not in areas or buildings that were well kept up. The scheduling left something to be desired too, the most intriguing films sometimes being shown on Easter Sunday.

This year the event will be April 25-May 8 at the Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St.

Tickets to movies are $9 general admission, $7 students, $4 for students and faculty of the School of the Art Institute and staff of the Art Institute, and $5 for Film Center members. Tickets may be purchased at the Film Center Box Office, which opens at 5 p.m. on weekdays and at 2 p.m. on weekends. General admission tickets are also available through Ticketmaster.

What a Typical White Person looks like

Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham–the one who is supposed to have said something racially offensive–turns up on a recent campaign video for him:

We never found out exactly what she said that was so racially perverted. Maybe she said something about Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act?

I wonder if she has googled herself lately.

Declassified satellite views of Darfur refugee camps

You can now see a high resolution satellite view of Darfur refugee camps that has been declassified. First you  download Google Earth, then you can do a search for refugee camps or for Darfur.

With the joystick-style navigational controls, you can move the satellite view in four directions, as well as closer or farther away, or you can just click on the screen and drag whatever you want to see closer. If you zoom close enough to the Darfur villages you can see white squares that are tents. You can also see recently burned villages.

There are also some interesting links on this thread.

“Americans United” Pastor from Obama’s Church of Christ watches separation of church and state–like a fox watches a chicken house

It’s a good thing that Americans United for Separation of Church and State is watching out for our religious freedom. But who is watching the watchers?

The IRS announced it would be investigating the Church of Christ for electioneering after one of the denomination’s most visible members, Senator Barack Obama, gave a speech at its 2007 convention. But the Americans United for Separation of Church and State decided not to file a complaint with the IRS. “We saw no evidence of UCC officials seeking to appear to endorse his candidacy”, says Americans United Executive Director Rev. Barry W. Lynn, who is also an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.

Americans United might take a look at the comments made by Rev. Jeremiah Wright from the pulpit of Barack Obama’s own Trinity Church of Christ. Video |here| Transcript of video:

“it just came to me with in the last few weeks y’all why so many folk are hatin’ on Barack Obama. He doesn’t fit the model. He ain’t white, he ain’t rich, and he ain’t privileged. Hillary fits the mold. Europeans fit the mold. Guiliani fits the mold. Rich white men fit the mold, Hillary never had a cab whiz past her and not pick her up because her skin was the wrong color. Hillary never had to worry about being pulled over in her car as a black man driving in the wrong aaaaaaahhh sick of Negroes who just do not get it (two males run up behind Wright and pound him on the back). Hillary was not a black boy raised in a single parent home, Barack was. Barack knows what it means to be a black man livin’ in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people. Hillary can never know that. Hillary ain’t never been called a n***** , Hillary has never had her people designed as non-persons. Hillary ain’t had to work twice as hard to get accepted by the rich white folk who want everything or to get a passing grade when you know you are smarter than that C student sittin’ in the white house. Ooooooh, I am so glad that I got a god who knows what it is to be a poor black man in a country and culture that is controlled by and run by white people. He taught me, Jesus did, how to love my enemies, Jesus taught me how to love the hell out of my enemies, and not be reduced to their level of hatred, bigotry, and small-mindedness, Hillary never had her own people say she wasn’t white enough. Jesus had his own people siding with the enemy. That’s why I love Jesus y’all. He never let their hatred dampen his Hope.”

If that doesn’t say Barack Obama is God and Hillary Clinton is The Enemy, I don’t know what does. But is that electioneering or is it theology?

Hate speech and Roger Stone: Hillary has never been called a ….

Is it true–as the Rev. Jeremiah Wright asserted in the now infamous sermon in which he thundered the “n-word” from the pulpit–that Hillary Clinton has never been the target of hate speech? Forget for a moment that when Wright talks about the other candidate, who just happens to be a member of that church, he doesn’t use the familiar first name, but respectfully uses the senator’s first and last name, Barack Obama. But when it comes to Senator Clinton the name thundered from the pulpit is “Hillary”.

Hillary ain’t never been called a n***** , Hillary has never had her people designed as non-persons.

If you really think Hillary has never been subjected to hate speech–assuming you don’t classify the above as hate speech–or had “her people” “designed” as non-persons, you might google Roger Stone’s Citizens United Not Timid (yup, that’s the acronym) a “527” organization dedicated to educating “the American Public about what Hillary Clinton really is.”

Florida Governor Crist takes slavery reparations public

The topic of reparations for slavery is about to go viral.

A few months ago, the only thing you heard about it was an occasional link at the bottom of a long thread of a political ticker blog–say, comment number 200 out of 350. Now, no less a public figure than Florida’s Republican Governor Charlie Crist has favored it. Reports the New York Times:

“And on Wednesday, Mr. Crist said he was open to evaluating whether broader reparations for slavery would be worth pursuing.”

Free Tibet

Years ago the film Seven Years in Tibet (banned in China) brought home the cruelty of the Chinese conquest of Tibet. A Chinese army with modern weapons obliterated the Tibetans, armed only with medieval bows and arrows. Nonetheless, the Tibetan army fought a hopeless and suicidal rear-guard action long enough to cover the escape of the Dalai Lama to India.

Since then little information has escaped from that area, but monks have brought out rumors of massive killing of native animal herds and scorched-earth destruction of native habitats.

As protests and demonstrations over Tibet followed the Olympic torch relay in Paris, one presidential hopeful, Hillary Clinton, called on President Bush to skip the opening ceremony for the Olympics.

Complete statement by Hillary Clinton on Olympics:

The violent clashes in Tibet and the failure of the Chinese government to use its full leverage with Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur are opportunities for Presidential leadership. These events underscore why I believe the Bush administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China. At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government.

I encourage the Chinese to take advantage of this moment as an opportunity to live up to universal human aspirations of respect for human rights and unity, ideals that the Olympic games have come to represent.

Americans will stand strong in support of freedom of religious and political expression and human rights. Americans will also stand strong and root for the success of American athletes who have worked hard and earned the right to compete in the Olympic Games of 2008.

The west has had few options for interference with China’s brutality in Tibet no matter how much sympathy exists for the Tibetans. Until now. Yes, this is the time to put pressure on China.

Free Tibet.
