Thin Ice

We have had several days of above freezing weather, even though the temperature still drops below freezing at night, but the plants don’t seem to be quite ready for spring.

The birds are ready. They are busy flying (and walking) north.

Part of the lake is still frozen.  Although the park entrance has a sign with a disclaimer about the thickness of the ice, you can see someone has been driving out onto the lake.

The Indiana shore has a brooding look.

The birds have found open water, but some prefer to stand on the edge of the ice.

Please, what is the beautiful tree (?) with the red branches?

Catanea, I have no idea, but I suspect it may be an undesirable plant. Here it is from a distance:

As you can see, it’s a large bush, a little taller than me, and is growing in an industrial corridor. It has several side shoots–I suspect it reproduces by underground rhizomes. But this time of year the color is welcome.
