Snowed in

but I’m not in a big hurry to get back home….

There’s a new boot for my fractured foot (the stitches are now out), and a newly converted Trekkie has some videos.  Plus, the fridge is full of all the cold, wholesome milk I can drink.  For entertainment, there is an occasional robin in the neighbor’s crab apple tree

and a hawk in a brush pile.

Pardon my ignorance, Nij, but ???
    Star Trek fan ?

  2. Nijma Says:

    Absolutely.

When I was growing up, it wasn’t on the approved watching list. Not sure why, the phasers were always on stun and evil was never allowed to flourish. I suppose it was a prime homework hour. When I went away to college, I more than made up for it. The poli sci majors watched it every night in the lounge outside the door to the cafeteria, so I changed meal times and had a brief incarnation as a poli sci major. The last time I checked, those people had become browncoats.

The released Star Trek set also has the original pilot, surprisingly good, with Roddenberry’s wife Majel Barrett as second in command–she later played Nurse Chapel and Ambassador Troi. Also some interviews, including Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) talking about the filming of TV’s first interracial kiss between her and Shatner.

Oh, wait, it just occurred to me that your question was really about the meaning of “trekkie”.

Yes, it means some sort of fanatic:

…the sort of person who, in response to a simple question, writes two paragraphs of Star Trek trivia. :)

[You probably already know King Abdullah once did a Star Trek cameo….]

    • Canehan Says:

I didn’t know about Abdullah. Suppose that was how he learned to make up so he could go round Jordan to clinics as a poor old man when he first came to the throne, to check how ordinary people were treated.

Anoehr question: what’s a browncoat ? Two nations divided by a single language !

    • Nijma Says:

I think Abdullah probably inherited his father’s makeup kit. King Hussein used to dress up as a taxi driver and drive around talking to people. So they say. Of course it’s always nice to brush up on the latest Hollywood techniques.

      Browncoats…
you were supposed to follow the Firefly link. But you won’t know about this short-lived TV show unless you frequent a particular bar on the West Bank in Minneapolis or know someone who does.

Best to just watch some episodes, at least the first 4 or 5 in more or less consecutive order, until you figure out the characters. (That is, if you like that sort of thing.) HULU used to have it.

[Mel and Zoe were in the great intergalactic war together, but on the losing side. After the war, Mel buys a spaceship of the Firefly class to try to make a living by smuggling. Zoe’s husband Wash is the pilot, Kaylee is the hippy-chick engineer, Inara is the courtesan and their only paying customer, Jayne is the asshole woman-hater with all the memorable lines. There are more characters later.]
Here are my links, scroll down to TV shows…

or google “firefly tv episodes”. I can’t view streaming content anymore so I don’t know how many of the links are still good.
